Summary of Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC)

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes 7 to 14 days, depending on your itinerary and length of walking days. We start from Nayapul (a 1 1/2 hour drive from Pokhara) and go north up to Ghorepani and then to the famous viewpoint of Poon Hill. From Ghorepani, you go eastward to Chomrong and then north again entering the Modi Kola Valley which leads up to the Base Camp. The setting of Annapurna Base Camp at 4130 m is unique and incredibly spectacular, set amidst the majestic peaks of Annapurna I (8091 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Machapuchhre (6993 m) and Hiunchuli (6441 m). The trail goes alongside terraced rice paddies, lush rhododendron forests and high altitude landscapes with the Annapurna Range in view most of the time. In addition to great scenery, the trek takes you through the villages of the ethnic communities of Gurung and Thakali.

How hard is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

This trekking can be completed successfully by anyone with a moderate level of fitness, who can walk 5-6 hours a day (besides the day to reach Bamboo from ABC which requires 7-8 hours). This trekking can do during all seasons but the Base Camp may be close in winter due to the snow sometimes.


    Arrive at Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu. You will be warm welcome by our airport representative and escort to your hotel. Stay Overnight at hotel Kathmandu.

    After breakfast, we leave our hotel early morning for a drive with scenic views along the road to Pokhara via Prithivi national highway. The drive could take roughly 6 hrs to reach Pokhara. We also have the option for a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara for 35 minutes. We will visit some prime spots in the lake city after refreshing at our hotel we will do a tour of some beautiful places in Pokhara that include Davids fall (if we reach early by road), and the Phewa Lake etc. we then do an overnight at our hotel by the lake in the lovely ‘city of lakes’ on BB Plan.

    After breakfast you will drive to Nayapul. The small village is the starting point of the trek. Just follow the Modi Khola (River) through picturesque farmlands and rice terraces to get to Tikhedhunga. Stay overnight at local Guest houses.

    Fuel yourself up with a delicious and nutritious rural delicacy. From today, the real trekking starts as you will have to hike up and down the strenuous hills of the region. Start with a steep climb on the 3500 stone steps to reach Ulleri. Further hike uphill will end the strenuous trail and make the trail easier. After a few hours of trekking, you will reach Ghorepani. Along the trail, experience the beautiful views of the Rhododendron forest, diverse flora and fauna and the scenic hillside. Stay overnight at local Guest houses.

    Today, early in the morning after breakfast, we start an hour hiking to Poon Hill (3210m), an excellent mountain range scene; this scenery provides an unhindered view of the sunrise over the great Himalayas. There we spend about 1 hour and recurring to Ghorepani, we will have our breakfast. Then we make a climb along ridges, and through pine and rhododendron forests, towards Deurali (2,960 m). After that, we descend to the Banthanti and then turn off to Tadapani. Stay overnight at local Guesthouses.

    At this juncture, we climb up for around an hour up to Kimrungdanda. On the way, we can enjoy great views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Fishtail Mountain (Machhapuchhre) and Ganggapurna. A steep descent takes us to the Kimrong Khola. After another steep ascent from Kimrong Khola to Chere Danda, we descend for a while and then it’s a gentle walk to Chhomrong. Chhomrong is a beautiful village located on the lap of the giant Annapurna massive. Stay overnight at local Guesthouses.

    Leaving Chomrong, the trail descends on a stone staircase and crosses the Chomrong Climbing further on a rocky trail (beware of the stinging nettles) you reach three hotels at Sinuwa, at 2350 m check post. You descend a long, steep stone staircase into deep bamboo and Rhododendron forests. It is then a short distance on a muddy trail to Bamboo Lodge (2340m.). Stay overnight at local Guesthouses.

    You trek gently & ascend through bamboo forests with varieties of rhododendron and oak trees. The first town you reach is Dovan (2630m.) where there are few lodges and camp sites. Now you pass through muddy trail which traverses high above the river. It takes approximately twenty minutes to reach Deurali (3230m.) Stay overnight at local Guest houses.

    Today we climb on past the Machhapuchhare Base Camp and continue trek to Annapurna Base Camp. This area is called the Annapurna Sanctuary since it is totally surrounded by mountains. From here it is a two-hour trek to Annapurna Base camp, which offers spectacular views. Stay overnight at tented camp.

    At dawn, you will have the opportunity to have glimpses of the golden sunrise over the Annapurna peaks. After breakfast, you will start to descend from the ABC to Bamboo via the Machhapuchhre Base Camp. You will finally get to Bamboo after full six-hours with small breaks in between. As the mornings are quite clear, you will likely experience the 360-degree views of the Annapurna mountain range along the route. Also, enjoy the views of the waterfalls that drop down from the icy glaciers to the rocks below. This should be a fairly easy downhill walk. Stay overnight at tented camp.

    After breakfast, we follow the same track until Chomrong. Once we have passed Khuldighar, there is a tentative sheep farm. The trail continues through Rhododendron and bamboo arenas. From Chomrong, the trail descends very steeply to the Jhinu, where we can soak in normal hot springs. Stay overnight at local Guest houses.

    From Jhinu we start to trek to Nayapool via Birethanti which is painstaking a best most taking relax of the whole Trek. We reach Nayapul. Then an hour drive will take us back to Pokhara. Stay overnight at Hotel Pokhara.

    After having breakfast we drive back to Kathmandu City [200 Km/ 6 hrs drive].

The following list should help you with your packing. Generally, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum

Footwear

Trekking boots, trekking socks, and sandals.

Clothing: 

Down jacket, waterproof jacket, and trousers, trekking trousers, long sleeve shirts, microfleece, mid to heavyweight fleece, sleeveless or body warmer type fleece, thermals or base layer for top & bottom (merino wool or synthetic), fleece pants,

Small personal first-aid kit. (Simple and light), Aspirin, first-aid tape, plasters (Band-Aids), 1 skin-blister repair kit Anti-diarrhea pills, Anti-headache pills, Cough and/or cold medicine, Anti-altitude sickness pills: Diamox or Acetylzolamide, Stomach antibiotic: Ciprofloxacin, etc. Do not bring sleeping pills as they are a respiratory depressant, Water purification tablets or water filter, 1 set of earplugs, Extra pair of prescription glasses and contact lens supplies.
